The Line Producer Job Description is best summed up by explaining what above the line and below the line means. Above the line budget includes the costs for the Film Director, Film Producer, Screenwriter and starring Actors. Below the line budget controlled by the Line Producer includes the budget for the equipment rental, cast members and Production Crew. Once that line is established, you can begin you job as line producer. You’ll be the one who uses the below the line budget to make sure it’s not exceeded the below the line budget.

Most line producers don’t have much creative input on a film, but you still require a complex skill set that is acquired through years of work in the film industry. You need:

Financial accounting aptitude and experience.

Schedule and budget making experience.

Solid knowledge of every aspect of movie production.

Leadership skills to keep a wide variety of people on schedule and encouraged.

Strong problem solving abilities.

Dedication to very long work days.

Business negotiation skills.

Ability to remain calm in high stress situations.

As line producer, you’ll join the film during pre-production and stay on until the end of Production. You’ll have a great many responsibilities and lots of pressure from many directions. A Line Producer Job Description includes but it not limited to:

Estimating a film’s expenses based on the script and drawing up a budget.

Creating a filming schedule.

Working with the director, producers, etc. to finalize budget and schedule.

Hiring of production team and overseeing the activities of their departments.

Overseeing set up of production office .

Diplomatically acting as liaison between producers and crew.

Procuring of equipment, locations, crew, etc.

Monitoring daily activities during production.

Assess the set for safety and compliance to health and safety regulations.

Monitoring and maintaining the budget.

Overseeing the winding down of the Production.

Line Producer Job Description Summery

A line producer earns a good salary. You work as a freelancer and acquire jobs based on experience and reputation. A film school education is helpful to gain the needed knowledge and experience in various areas of filmmaking, but it’s not a strict requirement.

With or without film school, line producers need to work for years in film, television or commercials to gain hands-on industry experience. You also need to develop a strong network of people in all areas of production as well as those who provide services to the industry. Many line producers start off as production assistants or runners and work up through assistant direction, location management or production offices. From line producer, some have moved on to the positions of producer and executive producer.
